An ophthalmologist is a doctor who specialises in eye care. Ophthalmologists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems. An ophthalmologist will assess your vision and, if necessary, find out which prescription glasses or contact lenses are best suited for you so that you can see clearly, both up close and far away, without any problems!

Ophthalmologists’ education
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who are trained to treat vision problems in both eyes. Often ophthalmologists also have additional training in eye-related operations and procedures specific to their specialty in ophthalmology.
What does an ophthalmologist do?
An ophthalmologist will check how your pupils react to light, check the alignment of the eyes and make sure that the eye muscles are working properly. As well as checking vision, an ophthalmologist also looks for early signs of glaucoma or cataracts, which can lead to serious visual impairment later. If something is wrong, this is usually followed by a check-up, during which the problem is resolved before it becomes too much of a concern.
Contact your ophthalmologist immediately if you experience any of the following:
- eye injury or infection
- Eye pain
- increased floating and flashes of light
- vision problems such as blurred or double vision
- Sudden loss of vision, even if it returns after a few seconds
When was the last time you had a comprehensive eye examination? If it’s been more than a few years, you are overdue and should make an appointment soon.
