What is myopia?

Myopia (also known as myopia) is a refractive error of the eyes, which is characterised by impaired vision of distant objects. This happens when light rays passing through the optical system cross in front of the retina – myopes have an elongated eyeball, or
their cornea is too prominent.

Myopia in children is a growing problem worldwide. If one parent is myopic, the child is at increased risk of myopia. If both parents are myopic, the risk increases to 35-60%. Regardless of heredity, children acquire myopia by spending a lot of time in front of smart technology devices. Depending on the size of the myopia, the risk of developing future eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachment or cataracts increases.

Myopia in children usually appears between the ages of 6 and 14 and stabilises around 18 years of age.

Spectacle lenses for myopia management

In 2015, it was estimated that 23% of the world’s population is myopic. By 2050, this figure is projected to increase to 50% due to lifestyle changes.

Today, myopia in children can be controlled, not just corrected. To avoid long-term vision problems, it is best to start treating myopia as early as possible.

Rodenstock MyCon™ spectacle lenses are an innovative solution to slow down the progression of myopia in children in an easy, safe, effective and non-invasive way.
